About Sarah Morris

Sarah Morris (born 1967 in Kent, UK) is an internationally acclaimed abstract painter and filmmaker whose work explores the complexities of modern urban life. Living and working between London and New York, Morris describes her two practices as “two sides of the same coin,” with each medium informing and expanding the other. Her art investigates the interplay between architecture, politics, and perception, creating a dynamic dialogue between image and environment.

Morris is particularly renowned for her large-scale geometric paintings and limited edition prints, which draw inspiration from cities including New York, Los Angeles, London, and Beijing. Using household gloss paint on square canvases, she constructs intricate grid-like patterns in muted pastel tones, sharply delineated with white outlines. These abstract structures evoke the architectural rhythms, cultural histories, and underlying systems of control embedded within the urban fabric. Each composition functions as both a portrait of a city and an exploration of the psychological and political forces that shape it.

Her approach to geometric abstraction is deeply connected to her filmmaking, which often documents global power centers, corporate environments, and urban architectures. This dual practice enriches her exploration of space and identity, positioning her as a major figure in contemporary conceptual art. By combining the visual rigor of abstraction with the narrative depth of cinema, Morris creates a multi-layered body of work that redefines how audiences engage with modern cities.

Sarah Morris’s artworks—including her highly sought-after paintings, screenprints, and editions—resonate with viewers for their ability to capture the pulse and rhythm of urban environments. Her bold visual language continues to inspire collectors, curators, and audiences worldwide, establishing her as one of the most significant contemporary artists working today.

Sarah Morris’s exhibition history reflects her international stature as a leading abstract painter and filmmaker. She gained early recognition in the 1990s with solo shows in New York and London, where her geometric paintings and films established her signature style.

Her work has since been presented at major institutions worldwide. Early highlights include solo exhibitions at the Philadelphia Museum of Art (2000) and Kunsthalle Zürich (2000), followed by the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin (2001) and the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C. (2002). In 2007, she was the subject of major shows at both the Whitechapel Gallery in London and the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus in Munich, which emphasized the interplay between her films and city-inspired paintings.

Further recognition came with large-scale exhibitions at the Museum für Moderne Kunst (MMK) in Frankfurt (2012), the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris (2014), and Kunsthalle Wien (2016–17), each affirming her international reach. Most recently, in 2023, the Deichtorhallen in Hamburg staged a comprehensive solo exhibition, highlighting the evolution of her practice across painting, film, and limited edition prints.

Morris has also participated in significant global events, including the Venice Biennale (1999 and 2003) and the São Paulo Biennial, where her investigations into architecture, power, and identity reached wide audiences. Her work is now represented in leading public collections such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Tate Modern in London, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.

Together, these exhibitions and institutional holdings underscore Sarah Morris’s reputation as one of the most influential contemporary artists of her generation, with a practice that continues to bridge geometric abstraction, urban systems, and cinema.
